Moldova Update
Speaking of communists, Moldova's parliamentary elections were held a few days ago (noted earlier here).
While the communists won most of the seats, there is good news…the opposition parties actually did well enough to keep the communists from having a full majority. The communists won 56 seats…5 short of having the majority of 61. This will keep them from electing their choice for President, Vladimir Voronin, outright.
Parliament has about 45 days to choose a president or there will be new elections (or if they vote three times on a candidate without a winner). If these opposition parties are able to unite (they are pretty fragmented right now), they could either make the communists settle on another presidential candidate or they could stall the process and make everyone go back to the polls…which would probably help them.
Some people have said that there were going to be some protests in the streets, but so far nothing has materialized. I think they are almost afraid of a drastic change away from communism. It’s a sad situation.
