The Coolest Thing Ever
Well...it's pretty darn close. I'm sure it's illegal as all get out, but hey...
Thanks to Gunner for finding this one.

Spider Man 2
Well, I don't normally go to opening nights of movies (the last opening night movie I attended was Red Dragon), but tonight I went to go see Spider Man 2. I have to say that it was pretty good...definitely a must see if you enjoyed the first one.
At times there tended to be a little too much over-dramatization by innocent bystanders. For example...there was "the hospital scene" that seemed to be a little cheesy, but if you know some of Sam Raimi's past work as director, then you'll know what I'm talking about. A chainsaw even made an appearance at one point...talk about flashbacks.
Speaking of Raimi's past work (and flashbacks for that matter)...Those of you expecting a cameo by Bruce Campbell (as I was) won't be disappointed.
And yes...there probably will be a Spider Man 3.
Overall...I think it's a must see for the summer. Plus, it's always better than giving money to this guy.

The 911 Call
I probably should have added a little more commentary with my June 28 post about the woman who was shot by her estranged husband.
Half-Bakered understood what I was getting at:
The message is clear, but let me add that we as a culture need to get back to teaching self-reliance, self-protection and preparedness. We should also reinforce healthy skepticism and wariness, even though it might damage a consumer culture built on feelings of inadequacy, impulse and helplessness. Fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, schools, churches, etc., should be working to raise strong, smart women who aren't inclined to bad choices and who can take care of themselves in a pinch. Anything less is asking for trouble.
No woman should find herself where this poor woman did. Those who do should know how to take care of themselves -- and their attacker.
We should live in a world where, as the song says, "A girl in trouble is a temporary thing."
Jimmie over at Suburban Sundries Shack (who is referencing this post by Michelle Malkin) says that what the 911 dispatcher was exactly the thing to do, and he's right.
However, my point is that we need to realize that we can't always rely on 911 and the police to protect us. We must "take responsibility for our own defense," as Bill Hobbs put it.
By the way...per DocB, the animal that shot his ex-wife has now been caught.

Man Downs Blimp with Shotgun
Found posted by Thibodeaux over at SaysUncle:
Man downs blimp with shotgun
Someone fired a shotgun blast and hit a remote-controlled advertising blimp Saturday as it flew in a field next to Team Chevrolet-Cadillac-Geo on South Jake Alexander Boulevard.
The blimp was advertising Cloninger Ford-Toyota.
Hahah...the blimp belonged to the Ford dealership and someone from Team Chevrolet shot it down. You can't make this up, folks.
Thibodeaux says: "Good thing he didn’t use an assault weapon."
Right you are...right you are...

Don't forget about China
Looks like there's going to be some nice sabre-rattling in the Pacific this July...
The exercise, codenamed Operation Summer Pulse 04, is expected to bring seven aircraft carrier strike groups, or CSGs, to waters a safe distance off the Chinese coastline -- but within striking distance -- after mid-July, The Straits Times reported Wednesday.
This will be the first time in U.S. naval history for seven of the navy's 12 CSGs to be sent to one region.
Let's not forget...China is still an enemy. If China ever decides to intervene in Taiwan, we're going to have a full-scale war on our hands.

Hillary VP?
Drudge is reporting that Kerry may give the VP to Hillary. That's what's coming from an "insider" anyway.
Yes...well...with comments like this, how can Kerry go wrong?
"We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
Of course, the "insider" here may be just leaking this rumor out to test the waters. We'll see.

It is getting too predictable
Publicola does a nice frisking of the article I linked to below.
Unfortunately being a police chief will make people listen to you even when you have no idea what you're talking about.
This article was a return to what I'd expect on the subject: a piece filled with ignorance about the technical aspects of the subject as well as giving only token space to dissenting views.
Unfortunately this won't be the last one on this subject, & odds are they'll be as bad if not worse. Remember, most readers of this tripe that gets printed don't know much about guns & they'll take a cops word over anyone elses because cops must know about guns, right? I do know a few cops who are generally knowledgable about firearms & on certain matters I respect their opinion. Unfortunately they weren't interviewed in this article.

Time for a New Sheriff
Looks like it's time for a new sheriff out in Williamson County, TN.
Sheriff Truman Jones is suing Rutherford County to add millions of dollars to his department's budget for 2004-2005.
Jones originally requested $20 million for law enforcement and the county jail, but the Budget, Finance and Investment Committee only gave him $12.3 million. Jones came back with a trimmed-down request for an additional $5.5 million, but the request was denied. Now Jones is suing the county for the full $20 million.
Jones wants the money so he can hire new staff and replace outdated equipment. With a $20 million budget, Jones could hire 94 sheriff's department employees. His scaled-back budget request could pay for 56 employees.
This is the same sheriff that ordered background checks on the entire staff of the student run Sidelines newspaper at MTSU because someone called the sheriff's department a "merry band of thugs." It was simply a sarcastic comment in an opinion piece. Of course, the entire episode only showed that the comment was more than likely an accurate representation.
So...I guess the sheriff needs the extra money to add more members to that group of thugs out there, eh?
To the Sidelines staff: Keep up the good work.

Horn Honkers
I didn't think I would find any coverage of the "Horn Honker's Reunion and FUNRaiser" sponsored by TNTaxRevolt.com, but there actually was....and it wasn't negative.
Surprisingly, the Tennessean did a story that wasn't too slanted (read it here), and the Williamson County Review Appeal also did a story on Spring Hill's mayor receiving award for his part in the passage of a Taxpayer Bill of Rights.
Almost one year after Spring Hill enacted a Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), the city’s mayor was recognized Saturday at a rally in Nashville for his part in passing the legislation.
A group of state income tax opponents known as the Tennessee Tax Revolt presented Mayor Ray Williams with a “Pioneer Award” for helping to create the amendment, which requires that Spring Hill hold a referendum for any proposed tax increase and also pledges the city would return any budget surplus to residents due to excess revenue in the city’s general fund balance.
“He was the first official who had the courage and the foresight to get this law enacted,” said Steve Carithers, a volunteer with Tennessee Tax Revolt. “That’s why we called it the Pioneer Award. Spring Hill has really become the testing ground.”
Now if we could only get more politicians to have some courage and foresight.

Reactionary Tactics
Lunacy abounds with the police down in Alabama after three Birmingham officers were killed with an SKS.
The rifle believed used in the recent slayings of three Birmingham police officers would be illegal under a bill now before Congress, a move supported by some of Alabama's top law officers in the wake of the deaths.
"It's a military weapon all day long," Montgomery police Chief John Wilson said Monday of the SKS, a semiautomatic rifle whose rounds can penetrate the protective vests worn by most police officers. "That's all it is, and it needs to be used for nothing more than that."
I really don't know how to even respond to articles with false information such as this:
Wilson, the Montgomery police chief, wrote an opinion piece for Sunday's Montgomery Advertiser in which he said the weapons were "easy to conceal, they shoot a multiple amount of rounds, they're easy to convert to full automatic - there are too many evils in those guns for the general public to be walking around with them."

Play it again, Sam...
I can't believe this wasn't done before either. It seems someone has finally opened up Rick's Cafe in Casablanca. I had thought that if one didn't exist that someone should at least open one up....looks like someone did.
An entrepreneur turned U.S. diplomat, Kriger fell in love with Morocco where she worked as commercial counselor for the U.S. Consulate in Casablanca, the country's economic hub.
Wanting to stay on when her post ended in 2001, she toyed with the idea of opening a Rick's Cafe to honor the film in which Bogart plays bar owner Rick Blaine.
"I couldn't believe no one had done it before," she said.
When I was in Casablanca, I remember the Hyatt Hotel I stayed at had a bar with a Humphrey Bogart/Casablanca theme (it all went well with Cuban cigars I seem to remember...but I digress). That was about as much as I found with the Casablanca theme there.
I'll definitely visit Rick's Cafe if I ever go back.

911
Did you know that law enforcement encourages you to dial 911 instead of attempting to defend yourself?
This is what happens when you dial 911 and wait.
911 Office, Tammy.
Tammy, my ex-husband's here with a gun. He's in here. He's got a gun.
He's going to kill them, hurry.
He's got my kids, quick.
What's his name?
Parker Elliott.
(Quick, shallow breathing)
2005 Forrest Ridge Trail, Culleoka. We've got a male subject in the house with a weapon.
He just told my kids he's going to kill them if I'm on the phone. He's going to kill me.
I don't need you to hang up. Has he been drinking?
He's going to kill me. They're in the hallway with him, and I'm hiding in the closet.
(First shot is heard)
I'm hiding in the closet. I'm coming out 'cause he'd not going to hurt my kids. The kids are with him.
Can they get out?
I want to make sure he doesn't shoot my kids. The kids are with him.
They're deterring him. Please, please, he's going to kill them.
Has he been drinking?
He's got to be.
How long has he been out of the residence?
(Labored, quick breathing)
The kids are telling him I'm not here. He said if I'm here, he'll kill them.
He just shot the gun.
He hasn't seen you yet?
He's coming. He just shot the gun again. Please! Please!
What kind of a gun is it?
A handgun. He's going to the front door.
(Dispatcher to other emergency personnel) He's inside the house, shooting. He had two children and an ex-wife.
Oh, he hit one of them!
Stay in the closet. He doesn't know you're in the closet?
He can see the phone cord coming in. Oh! He hit one of them.
(Gunshots. Sound of girl screaming in the background)
They've got the gun. I think my kids have got my gun. I can't believe I forgot to get it.
I think one of my children has the weapon. He's shot five times. I'm hiding in the closet, and my kids are out there with him.
How old are the kids?
15 and 18.
(Gunshots and screaming)
He shot five more. Is that all of them?
Ma'am, I don't know what kind of gun he has.
He hasn't shot them yet. My kids are still OK.
(Labored breathing)
(Kids screaming)
He's going to kill me.
(Screaming)
He's coming to the closet! He's coming to the closet! He's coming to the closet!
(Kids screaming, shrieking)
He's at the closet. He's going to shoot me. Help me! He's here. He's gonna hit me with the gun.
(Children screaming in the background)
Calm down.
He's still shooting at the kids! Help me!
(Whimpering)
Be calm! They're getting there. They're coming.
He's beating on the doors.
(Loud banging)
He's still shooting.
Parker, don't!
Parker, no! Please, no!
He's going to beat a hole in the door.
Ma'am, calm down. What's your name?
Please! Freda! Freda!
(Yell heard from man in background)
Please, don't hurt my kids! Don't hurt my babies! Parker, no!
Where are they?
I don't know.
(Screaming)
Parker, please! Don't!
(Screams, screams, screams)
(Gunshots)
Don't hurt my babies!!
(Shrieks)
(Screams)
Freda, what's going on? Freda?
(Gunshots, gunshots)
Hello?
This is E-Com 720. We just heard two gunshots inside the residence. We heard a woman screaming. Now we've got dead silence.
10-4.

Ummm...
Ummm....do what?
More than a dozen lawmakers attended a congressional reception this year honoring the Rev. Sun Myung Moon where Moon declared himself the Messiah and said his teachings have helped Hitler and Stalin be "reborn as new persons. "
At the March 23 ceremony in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., wore white gloves and carried a pillow holding an ornate crown that was placed on Moon's head. The Korean-born businessman and religious leader then delivered a long speech saying he was "sent to Earth ... to save the world's 6 billion people. ... Emperors, kings and presidents ... have declared to all heaven and Earth that Rev. Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity's savior, messiah, returning lord and true parent."

Gun used to start WWI found
The gun used by Gavrilo Princip to kill Archduke Franz Ferdinand thus sparking the Great War (WWI) has been found.
The Browning pistol that killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand and sparked World War I has been located in a Jesuit house in Austria, The Telegraph said Tuesday.
The gun was last fired June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo by a Belgrade university student named Gavrilo Princip, who killed Ferdinand and his wife with seven shots.
Anton Puntigam, a Jesuit priest who was at the scene gave the couple last rites, and made it known he would one day open a museum in memory of the archduke.
June 28 marks the 90th anniversary of the act that started the Great War. It's an event that changed our world forever...effectively marking the beginning of the modern era of both politics and warfare. We still feel the effects of that war today.
I highly recommend that you read The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman. It's a very interesting book that lays out the political and military ideals that led up to the Great War. It then covers the first month of the war right up until stalemate is reached and miserable trench warfare becomes the order of the day. Even if you aren't interested in World War I history, you will still find this book a good read.

Papers Please
The U.S. v. Hiibel decision finally came down today...the news is not good...
The Supreme Court ruled Monday that people do not have a constitutional right to refuse to tell police their names.
The 5-4 decision frees the government to arrest and punish people who won't cooperate by revealing their identity.
The decision was a defeat for privacy rights advocates who argued that the government could use this power to force people who have done nothing wrong, other than catch the attention of police, to divulge information that may be used for broad data base searches.
As someone on the phone just said, "Welcome to the police state of America."
Here's a good breakdown on the fundamentals of what this case was about.

A Travesty
Today I received bad news regarding Mark Lancaster's case. The government has decided to appeal the downward departure given to him just over a month ago. A few minutes ago I wrote a letter to a group of Mark's friends that all know him through church. Rather that re-writing the context of that letter, I will simply post it here and allow my points to be made in this forum for all to see.
Ladies and gentlemen,
I have to admit that I’ve come to a state of utter disbelief and anger as I have learned today that the United States Attorney’s Office has filed an appeal against Mark’s sentence. They are seeking to overturn Judge Echol’s decision to downward depart from 30-37 months to 12 months. Essentially, they want to extend the amount of time that he will spend in jail.
I have reached a point of outrage. Why? There are several reasons. 1) The U.S. Attorney’s office has decided that they need to spend time and money in putting a non-violent person in jail instead of pursuing violent criminals. 2) The laws that Mark broke were un-Constitutional (2nd Amendment, people…do I need to give you all a lesson in Constitutional law?), yet the U.S. Attorney’s office and BATF seek to add insult to injury by pursuing this to the bitter end. 3) Mark’s family has been drug through the mud and back again. Just when it seemed like it was over (to the point where his fate was known), the government has decided to impose their will above and beyond what they have already done. Mark just wants to get on with his life and serve the time given to him, but now everything is in limbo yet again.
People, what the government is doing here is a travesty. They have exceeded their Constitutional limits and there’s nothing you or anyone else can do about it. The sad fact is that this goes on all the time all over the country, but this is the first time you have probably witnessed this through someone you know personally.
I may be in danger of sounding like an “extremist right wing nut,” but I am not. I am a law abiding citizen who loves his country. I am also of the belief that our country was founded on faith in God, and today that might make me an “extremist,” but guess what…most of you who read this are in the same category. You have been forced into a corner that if you express your faith you are considered an extremist and intolerant. However, we all sit here in our comfortable spaces with blinders on so that we may not incur the wrath of those that might be offended and then label us “fundamentalists” or “extremists.” Where has our country gone?
I am also a firm believer that the United States Constitution has the final say on the laws in this country. No, it’s not a living breathing document that changes over time. It’s a set of rules that can not and should not be changed or slanted to fit the government’s idea of how it should be operating at a certain time in history.
How has Mark been Constitutionally violated?
1) The 2nd Amendment. The right of the people to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. Whether you think “common-sense” gun laws are right or not, the 2nd Amendment has been forgotten about.
2) The Federal government does not have jurisdiction in this case because it does not fit within the Interstate Commerce Clause (see 9th Circuit’s decision in US v. Stewart). According to the Constitution, the Federal government can only act in a matter when illegal interstate commerce has taken place. That would mean going across state lines to commit a murder, dealing illegally across state lines, etc. When Mark purchased the parts for his guns, they were in complete legal form. If I purchase a tree from Kentucky in order to make pencils, is that tree a pencil? No…it does not become a pencil until I make it into a pencil. If I did that in my home, then the Federal government has no right to come in and confiscate that pencil (if pencils were illegal). It would be up to the state. The Federal government has violated the Constitution as it related to Interstate Commerce.
3) The 4th Amendment. Probable cause was wrongly obtained in the search warrant against Mark. Using lies and deception, a group of anonymous persons told the government that Mark had “illegal” firearms. Due to the fact that the search warrant was obtained on lies, the search warrant is invalid.
4) The 6th Amendment. In all criminal prosecutions the accused shall be confronted with the witnesses against him. Because the Federal government has decided that their lives might be in danger, they have kept the witnesses’ names secret. This is a direct violation of the 6th Amendment.
Above are four ways in which the government has violated the Constitution in Mark’s case. I’ll say again…this goes on all the time all over the country. Our government has overstepped its Constitutional limits.
We say to ourselves…”Well, that’s too bad…I hate it for him,” all the while remaining silent…forgetting that “we the people” are the real power in this country. The Constitution was written to stop the very thing that is going on right now! Were any of us taught this in our high school history classes? No we weren’t (either that, or at that point in our lives we didn’t care and didn’t pay attention), and that’s why this country is where it’s at today. The founding fathers knew that the only way this country would continue to work (in the way that they designed it) was for the citizenry to continually remain committed to understanding and learning how the Constitution works. We were to also cherish the ideals that founded our country and keep the flame of liberty burning. We have failed, and it’s too late to do anything about it.
I’ve probably vented enough…now it’s your turn. Now that I have told you the truth, what are you going to do with it? Read it and feel pity for Mark and his family or actually do something about it? Spread the truth, my friends.
Here’s what I’ll be doing…I’ll write about it on my website and spread the word, I’ll probably be writing the U.S. Attorney’s office in Nashville, I’ll also write my elected representatives. I encourage you to also write the U.S. Attorney’s office along with your representatives.
United States Attorney
James K. Vines
110 Ninth Avenue, South
Suite A961
Nashville, TN 37203
(*note: this information is publicly available on the internet)
Morally and Constitutionally, the government is wrong. I am calling them out on it, and you should too.
The same call goes out to all of you as well.
Remember the "wake up call" written in a local paper that I posted in April? That was a reporter's wake up call...this one is mine.

Pointe du Hoc
On the 40th anniversary of D-Day, Ronald Reagan recounted the story of the Rangers who fought at Pointe du Hoc in Normandy.
WE stand on a lonely, windswept point on the northern shore of France. The air is soft, but 40 years ago at this moment, the air was dense with smoke and the cries of men, and the air was filled with the crack of rifle fire and the roar of cannon.
At dawn, on the morning of the 6th of June, 1944, 225 Rangers jumped off the British landing craft and ran to the bottom of these cliffs. Their mission was one of the most difficult and daring of the invasion: to climb these sheer and desolate cliffs and take out the enemy guns. The Allies had been told that some of the mightiest of these guns were here and they would be trained on the beaches to stop the Allied advance.
The Rangers looked up and saw the enemy soldiers - the edge of the cliffs shooting down at them with machine guns and throwing grenades. And the American Rangers began to climb. They shot rope ladders over the face of these cliffs and began to pull themselves up. When one Ranger fell, another would take his place. When one rope was cut, a Ranger would grab another and begin his climb again. They climbed, shot back, and held their footing.
Read the entire speech here.

The Day Before
Yesterday (June 4, 1944) Allied forces entered Rome with little to no resistance. Today soldiers in England were waiting...the task that lay ahead would change all of their lives.
SUPREME HEADQUARTERS
ALLIED EXPEDITIONARY FORCE
Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!
You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.
Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.
But this is the year of 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!
I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!
Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.
-Dwight D. Eisenhower
Right now, thousands of paratroopers were on already on the ground in Normandy. The invasion has begun.

Today We Mourn
"In closing let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future. I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead." — Ronald Reagan, 1911-2004

Tiananmen Square
What do you remember most about the Tiananmen Square massacre? The lone protestor standing in front of the tank?
On the 15th anniversary of this event comes a very good story regarding this brave soul:
No one knows whether he's dead or alive. Chinese activists and government officials say they aren't even sure of his name. After suddenly emerging to symbolize for the world the fierce power of the individual spirit in the face of martial rule, he vanished.
"For me, he represents the unknown soldier of the Chinese democratic revolution," said John Kamm, executive director of the Dui Hua Foundation, a San Francisco-based human rights group. "What's so strange is that his act of bravery was conducted in plain view of the world. But other than seeing his act, we know so very little about him."
However, within the story comes this most extraordinary revelation:
No one in the country has ever seen the images. In fact, no ordinary Chinese beyond the protesters and soldiers involved even knows of the standoff. Even today, Chinese can't see the famous photograph, even on the Internet. Attempts to download the picture are blocked by the government.
Simply amazing...it's a concept that here in America most people can't understand.

The Religion Gap
It's no surprise that most regular, church-going Christians tend to vote Republican. What is interesting is that the "religious gap" has become wider than ever.
Forget the gender gap. The "religion gap" is bigger, more powerful and growing. The divide isn't between Catholics and Protestants, Jews and Gentiles. Instead, on one side are those of many faiths who go to services, well, religiously: Catholics who attend Mass without fail, evangelical Christians and mainline Protestants who show up for church rain or shine, some Orthodox Jews. On the other side are those who attend religious services only occasionally or never.
It's a pretty interesting article. I guess that I now have data when I say that liberals are heathens. Ok, just a joke. In fact, a coworker friend attends church on a regular basis, and it doesn't stop him from being "liberal as hell" (yes...the pun was intended).
The following point in the article really sums it all up:
"Once social issues came to the forefront - abortion, gay rights, women's rights - it generated differences based on religious attendance," says John Green, a University of Akron political scientist who studies religion and politics. "More observant people tend to have more traditional morality, and they moved in a more conservative direction because of those issues."
Anyway...read the entire article.

Afix Bayonets!
I should have posted this a while back, but this comes from the Sun:
Bayonet Brits kill 35 rebels
OUTNUMBERED British soldiers killed 35 Iraqi attackers in the Army's first bayonet charge since the Falklands War 22 years ago. The fearless Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders stormed rebel positions after being ambushed and pinned down.
Despite being outnumbered five to one, they suffered only three minor wounds in the hand-to-hand fighting near the city of Amara. The battle erupted after Land Rovers carrying 20 Argylls came under attack on a highway.
After radioing for back-up, they fixed bayonets and charged at 100 rebels using tactics learned in drills. When the fighting ended bodies lay all over the highway - and more were floating in a nearby river. Nine rebels were captured.
An Army spokesman said: "This was an intense engagement."
The last bayonet charge was by the Scots Guards and the Paras against Argentinian positions.
All I have to say is don't mess with the Scots! Them's my people!

Irrelevant?
This says everything:
She agreed with abortion rights activists that a woman's right to choose is paramount, and that it is therefore "irrelevant" whether a fetus suffers pain, as abortion foes contend.
It's "irrevelant?" I thought part of the argument that pro-choicers use was that the fetus doesn't feel any pain. Now it's just irrelevant since it might get in the way of their lifestyle "choice?"
We as a society are damned.
