A local judge has won high praise from the White House for how Nashville handles drug offenders. The nation’s drug czar has just named the Davidson County Drug Court as one of the most effective drug programs in the U.S. In fact, law enforcement from all around the country regularly tour the program to see how it works. Congress recently appropriated $1 million for the program, so it will soon expand.
Judge Seth Norman established the program seven years ago. It allows non-violent offenders a chance to avoid jail time by entering an 18-month local treatment program instead. Break any rules of the treatment program, and you wind up behind bars. Judge Norman says that less than 20% of those involved commit another crime.
