Three out of five cities say revenues are not keeping pace with increasing fiscal demands, according to City Fiscal Conditions in 2004, a new report from the National League of Cities (NLC). Nashville can be considered one of those cities.

Only Hendersonville and Springfield responded to the survey from Tennessee but Metro Finance Director David Manning said he would place Nashville in that group.

Increases in spending for public safety and infrastructure, when coupled with the rising costs of employee health benefits, pensions and wages, are listed as contributing factors for the financial woes most cities are facing.

Gibson Musical Instruments officials announced Tuesday that they will open on Dec. 4 their Gulch-based Baldwin Nashville Showcase, a 24,000-square-foot retail operation stocking Baldwin pianos and housed in a renovated building that sits at the corner of Grundy Street and 11th Avenue near the popular 12th and Porter restaurant and music venue.

Gibson bought the Baldwin Piano Co. in November 2001, according to Gibson spokeman Walter Carter.

Carter, who declined to give a price tag for the renovation project, said the Baldwin Nashville Showcase opening will be highlighted by a Dec. 3 helicopter dropping (at 6 p.m.) of an old piano into a parking lot near the building.
